Dimensions: 6.25 x 6.25 x 1.25 Media: Sculpture Artist Statement : My work in sculpture focuses on representations of concepts and qualities of humanness—the characterization of various universal emotions, sensations, thought processes, the embodiment of self-identity and manifestations of spirituality. With a background as a professional dancer, choreographer and competitive athlete, I employ the language of the human body as a means of creative expression. In sculpture I often use aspects and parts of the human anatomy to convey ideas in physical form. Working primarily in metal renders weight and material presence that I find particularly engaging. The physicality and three-dimensional visual aspect that comes from being a dancer are what attract me to this medium. Seeing my work I wish the viewer to find resonance and relevance of “being human” as I explore and express in physical form various facets, abstractions and iterations centering around tmind-body connection and the human experience.

With a concentration in mixed media, more specifically paper weaving, Ellis seeks to reduce text and meanings to their basic parts in order to provide the viewer with a different reading of the theme. Using various texts Ellis provides a commentary, asks a question, or makes a subtle protest through the subversive nature of destroying something of value or juxtaposing texts together.

Artist Statement : The photograph of dancers in this digital collage (used with permission and superimposed over that of a purple coneflower) was taken at Susan Campbell Park at the city dock in Annapolis, MD, as teens danced to the music of a public guitarist. Their joyful dancing, not hindered by self-judgement, was truly beautiful.
Dimensions: 12 x 12 x 1.5 Media: Archival Ink on Aluminum Plate (Digital Vector Image) Artist Statement : If an artist loses the sight in one eye, perception of depth disappears. How does one know where the canvas, paper, brush is in space? How does one produce work if they are an artist? I chose to utilize the tools available in the digital media graphics packages. More specifically, vector programs where curves can be scaled. Geometry and interference patterns play a key role in my thinking and output. The moiré-like aberrations are illusions our eyes and brains can not shake and create the ambiguity i like to see. Geometry and curve frequency are precisely inevitable and yet ambiguities abound, drawing the viewer into the image.

The impact also causes the lead to curl up from the strike so no two tiles will be exactly the same.

Her works are non-representational; furthermore, the designs are not planned, so each piece evolves as color and shape and assumes its own character. The viewer is then free to experience the paintings intuitively without a prescribed subject or focus. Rita endeavors to make forms and color evocative, experiential, and capable of eliciting emotion and mood.

The artist presents her own interpretation of being in this world. The viewer, in turn, takes in the physical object with eyes, but experiences it through the prism of an entire lifetime. As a painter, I connect with my deepest knowing and lay it bare as an offering to record a moment—or many—in time. I am ecstatic during this process. I am also ecstatic when that offering ignites a fire in the heart of another. This fire is akin to poetry; poetry that passes from the eye to the heart.

Artist Statement : Starting with the edges, I used ink to create an abstract background. Using a limited palette, created ambiguous forms to entice the viewer to create their own story as to what
they are seeing. Some shapes may look familiar and some are just almost there, but we're not quite sure. I made an effort to use color, shape and line so that the eye of the viewer would move throughout the piece. Please look closely.

It also just so happened that there were bathroom tiles in a pile of free art supplies...So naturally, while wielding a brush in hand, I painted it.

I've taken care of yard work in a lot of situations. From a suburban yard with St Augustine and live oaks to middle of nowhere country where we mowed the yard with a bush hog and two weed eaters. All during Alabama heat and humidity that can reach up to 100 degrees. In each situation the feeling was the same. There is a moment of satisfaction when you've finished. You clean up and settle into somewhere cool to ( hopefully) watch a ball game. It could be baseball. It could be college football. But it is always the best.
This is an artist's proof.. One of a lot of experimentation. I actually didn't like it at first, but I framed it and hung it where I would walk past it every day. (Many of my photos are b&w and serious.) Then one day? I liked it. It was summer and more like my real life.
